Prostate Defined
A sex gland in men. It is about the size of a walnut, and surrounds the neck of the bladder and urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder. It is partly muscular and partly glandular, with ducts opening into the prostatic portion of the urethra. It is made up of three lobes: a center lobe with one lobe on each side.

The RapidArc turns around the patient for better dose distribution, something that no other computer-controlled radiation system, or what’s called intensity-modulated radiation therapy, can do. The urology practice just debuted the RapidArc this past week, starting with patients with prostate cancer and will roll out the system to patients with other cancers shortly.

- "Erratic" Placement of Radiation Seeds in Prostate Cancer Patients: July 1, 2009 ? Earlier this week, a Congressional hearing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was told of "erratic& quot; placement of radiation seeds used in brachytherapy for prostate cancer that had ended up in other organs, including the rectum, bladder, and perineum. At the hearing, the physician responsible for the procedures said that erroneous placements were a "recogniz ed risk" of brachytherapy. However, his comment was rebuffed by an expert contacted by Medscape Oncology. The procedure was carried out at the Philadelphia prostate unit at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, which is associated with the University of Pennsylvania. The treatment program was suspended last year, and an investigation was launched.
