  • Laying the regulatory path for advanced therapies : Article : Nature Reviews Drug Discovery: Satisfactorily addressing CMC-related product characterizati on is also a critical issue for therapies based on embryonic stem (ES) cells, says Robert Lanza, Chief Scientific Officer at Advanced Cell Technology, USA. The company is aiming to file an investigationa l new drug application (IND) for an ES-cell-based therapy for eye disorders this year, and from pre-IND discussions with the FDA, Lanza knows that they have to be absolutely certain that their cells are well characterized. "If 1% of our stem cell population is undifferentiat ed, it could result in tumour formation or putting the wrong tissue type in the wrong organ," he says.
